New Boats

Synopsis

«The New Boats» is an investigative documentary that offers a revealing perspective on the impact of international industrial fishing in West African waters and its disastrous effects on local communities at a critical moment in Sierra Leone’s history.Tombo village, located on the Freetown peninsula, is one of Sierra Leone’s largest artisanal fishing ports, providing nearly 90% of the country’s consumed protein.Historically thriving since pre-colonial times, Tombo has seen its prosperity decline in recent decades due to an influx of Asian trawlers overfishing its shores, often with clandestine support from corrupt officials. Consequently, local fishermen of all ages are frequently forced to leave Tombo behind and migrate in search of livelihoods. The village’s women have also lost their traditional source of income, processing and selling catches at the market.Sulaiman Kamara and other local fishermen passionately advocate for Tombo, desperately trying to prevent an environmental catastrophe as West African fishing teeters on the brink of collapse.
